A Town Shaped by Early Texas Settlement
Bellville’s story begins in the early 1800s with some of Stephen F. Austin’s earliest settlers, including Thomas and James Bell. Their contributions helped establish the foundation for what would become Bellville, which was later designated the county seat of Austin County in 1846. The town was officially planned a few years later around a central courthouse square that still anchors the community today.

A Community Shaped Over Time
Bellville’s history is defined not just by its origins, but by how it developed over time into a community shaped by steady growth, local traditions, and its place within the broader story of Texas and Austin County.

A Growing County Seat
As Austin County developed, Bellville grew alongside it through agriculture, trade, and regional commerce. The arrival of the railroad helped support continued growth, establishing Bellville as a steady hub for the surrounding rural communities.

A Lasting Sense of Place
While much has changed over time, Bellville’s historic layout, courthouse square, and long-standing traditions continue to shape its identity. The town’s history is still present in its architecture and the stories preserved by local organizations like the Bellville Historical Society.

Part of a Larger Texas Story
Bellville is closely connected to the broader history of Austin County and nearby San Felipe de Austin, one of the most significant early settlements in Texas history. Together, these places help tell the story of early colonization and the growth of Texas communities.
